Problems Of Indian Education System

Today’s education system might be good to score marks but fails to retain the knowledge once students completed their examinations. Our basic education system is rigid, rusty and mundane. The education system failed in its true objective. In India students didn’t get admission in universities on the basis of their knowledge and abilities. Marks cannot decide the future of any students.

17 year old home schooled girl MALVIKA RAJ JOSHI from Mumbai got rejected by IIT because she did not have class 10th and 12th certificates but accepted by MIT one of the most prestigious university.

While going through some articles I read a mother’s complain about today’s education system. Savitri Rao, mother of an 11-year-old studying in fifth standard in an ICSE school in Bangalore, complains that the manner in which her son is being taught restricts him from actually thinking about what he is doing. “It’s a rut more than anything else,” says the disgusted mother. “And it hardly serves any purpose except for a sheet of paper that will be the license to study further; nothing more,” she adds.

EDUCATION IS WHAT REMAINS AFTER YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN EVERYTHING YOU LEARNED IN SCHOOL. ~ALBERT EINSTEIN

Now, for some serious facts and stats regarding Indian education system vindicating the aforementioned lacunae:

  • In India, just 11% of the children finishing school joins a college whereas in the US, this figure amounts to a whopping 83%.
  • According to a study by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, 90% of the colleges and 70% of the universities that the council graded were of middling or poor quality.
  • There is an endemic shortage of teachers with even the IITs reporting a 20% to 30% shortfall in faculty. Indian universities, if one goes by average, revise their curricula only once in 5 to 10 years but by then they get defeated in both letter and spirit.
  • Corruption is the by-word in higher education having become rampant and institutionalized due to over-regulation by the government and multiplicity of education agencies leading to what else but stagnation in this very vital sector of education.
  • The lack of good institutions has seen cut-off percentages for entry into good colleges soar to almost impossible levels (at Delhi’s SHRI RAM College of Commerce, this percentage was as high as 98.75). There is an undue pressure to do well in the secondary board exams because of which the suicidal tendency has grown alarmingly.

Owing to poor quality of education at home, Indian students now spend no less than $7000 million to go abroad and study in foreign universities. Still the government is adamant over its peculiar stance of not permitting foreign universities to set up shop in India.

There are few major problems that are more severe and needs immediate rectifications –

Discrimination among students: In India where students are given only choice of succeeding in exams, irrespective of their personal abilities, interest etc. They are forced to get on top in boards exams, getting seat in prestigious college etc. And now these private corporate are taking advantage of this and earning lots of money. These private corporate see students as machines and create intense pressure among them. They also forced the students to get the top rank and also create a discrimination among the students. It leads to suicide among the teenagers as they are not able to handle the pressure and cannot tolerate this discrimination.

Mode of learning: This is the main challenge of Indian education system. Mode of learning to be checked seriously and immediate changes should be done to achieve success. As the matter of the fact, in our education system major importance is given to history part rather than the present. I agree, history need to be learn but not the deep study is required. People are lacking behind about the present. They don’t know what is happening or what new methods and technology are introduced. So more value and importance should be given to present part. In India theoretical approach is most preferred to practical approach. This required changes because now vocational and technical knowledge is more important and it remains with us forever rather than theoretical part.

Examination pattern and Reservation system this is one of major problem of our education system and it needed to be changed. we should say no to the reservation system. In schools and colleges more of the exams are held rather than the study. The students are taught how to mug up and reciprocate the same what they had learnt throughout the year and based on it they get awarded grades, percentages, etc.

Our education system is old and it need drastic changes if they need good and potential people for the job and for any other field. Otherwise people are going abroad because they are getting more opportunities according to their knowledge, skills and abilities.

  1. I agree there are many deficiencies in our education system. But we should remember that it also produces many brilliant students who do very well if given right opportunities. There are numerous Indians in important positions even in developed countries.
The main problem according to me is the lack of political will to improve things. If one government tries to bring some changes, the next government reverses all those decisions. My son was a science student and was curious to learn many things. He even got some opportunities to get in depth knowledge while preparing projects in his school (which I did not get, as we had to simply memorize lessons and pass tests). The government changed and has done away with CCE. If there were deficiency in CCE and grading system, those should be rectified instead of doing away with it all together.

    1. I agree with you that it produces very brilliant students but it fails to give them opportunities. Ya government should do something regarding our educational system. It should be more vocal and online. We are pressurized by our parents to score high marks either we ‘re capable or not.

Thank you so much for reading my blog and your feedback is really appreciate. 😊😊

  2. There may be severe problems ahead of us but it is my strong belief that every problem comes with equal or greater opportunities.
Our education system is filled with problems but still there is no sign of change, the system is passive as though everything is allright.
Now, its upto us to find opportunities and think in the direction of change.
My first blog post is also in that respect and it is good to see you raising your voice against the problems of the education system.
Thanks for the post and keep going………

  3. Ok…..as u told every weak and negative point about our education system(which is 100% correct)…..but the 1st thing is that u didnt explain any cause of such problems(basic causes)…..2nd as a blogger u didnt explain any remedy or solution to such problems…..3rd(according to me) we should not compare india with any other country(specially developed ones) because there is huge difference in every single thing…..lastly, yes it was good try n indeed a true worded article…..but it lacked practical approach…..

  4. Basically, Indian education system doesn’t give education on the basis of interests of the student, it imposes the same education to everyone i.e according to their hobbies they aren’t given education. “ONE SCHEME FOR EVERYONE” is what our system believes. I would love to add few more points with the link below.
